FastEDR goes to Singapore – bringing a new set of applications with it

Scintam is exhibiting at MRO Asia-Pacific on the 23rd and 24th September at Singapore EXPO, stand 1921.

Since Farnborough International Airshow in July, FastEDR has moved into three new areas: gas turbine, military rotorcraft and continuing commercial engine work.

Here's what's changed, and who the team is hoping to meet in Singapore.

A sudden uptick in demand for gas turbine applications

Scintam has had multiple conversations with gas turbine maintenance companies in a short window, and two gas turbine applications are now in progress:

Removing welded rivets from an LM2500 combustor liner. The combustor liner sits inside the engine and holds the flame. It's a hot section part, so it comes out for inspection and repair on a regular basis. This one has rivets welded into it. Scintam has designed a fixture that clicks into place and locates on those rivets, so the FastEDR tool head can be put through and machine them out.

Removing balancing plugs from Avon turbine discs (HP, IP & LP). When a disc is balanced, weights are fitted into holes around it, much like balancing a car wheel. Those plugs are rammed in, and getting them out again is difficult.

Two new applications for Apache helicopters

When running demonstrations at Farnborough, we identified two new applications and now have fixtures in design.

For example, Jo-Bolts aren't designed to come out – there's nothing to grip and no access to the back, so drilling them risks the surrounding structure. Scintam's custom fixture lets FastEDR machine them out.

LEAP engine work

Scintam is also developing applications for the LEAP engine with a leading MRO.

Why the demand for fastener removal is there

A recent report by Oliver Wyman states that there are around 30,000 aircraft in service, and over 17,000 aircraft orders were unfilled at the end of 2025 – with a backlog stretching 12 years and a production shortfall of over 6,000 aircraft against pre-pandemic expectations.

Aircraft are staying in service longer, which means more structural inspections, more repairs and more fastener replacement.

Plus, there are now fewer people to do it, with 41% of US certified mechanics over the age of 60 and approximately 45,000 retiring within a decade.

FastEDR reduces the dependence on scarce skills. The operation doesn't require any precision drilling expertise – you put the toolhead over the fastener and pull a trigger.
